African Pacific is a fairly traded company specialising in organics and fairly traded products from the South Pacific.

We work with environmentally sustainable principles for the full product cycle – from the seed to the products to the packaging. We have initiated and worked alongside growers of coconut, cocoa, and vanilla in the region since 1998.

Hope all well…thank you all for the support in 2012…just a quick note to before the Christmas break. The Vanuatu Agriculture College and the Pacific Growers Export Partnership will be hosting a series of Sustainable Agri-Business workshops in line with the Strategic Policy Brief on Cocoa Development in Vanuatu 2012 – 2015. (attached).
Please let us know if you are interested in attending or if you would like to be kept informed of developments. We are focused on a strongly participatory and co-creative process and would also appreciate any comments or feedback as well as any support that may be available.
Brief:
For the first workshop of a series of four PGEP Vanuatu Sustainable Agri-Business Workshop will have the focus of organic certification, within the wider AP/PGEP strategy goal to facilitate a low cost, multi-certification platform for growers across the Pacific Region.
Funding:
At this stage the Workshops will be hosted by the, Vanuatu Agriculture College, Pacific Growers Export Partnership Biological Farmers of Australia. All participating partners/stakeholders should at this stage seek their own funding. We will endeavour to create a budget to assist those who cannot make it on financial grounds, but the focus will be to get Vanuatu cocoa growers to the workshop in Santo.
Workshop Outline:
In terms of the focus, our mission will be
1. Certification:
To have completed the required paperwork to commence the certification process for stakeholders who have expressed interest, which includes

3 plantations (coconut& cocoa) ,
1 processor (coconut),
2 Grower Groups (cocoa)

2. Information & Education:

- To invite growers and cooperatives to join the conversation on certification and understand the requirements from a growers perspective in terms of managing information, information requirements, expectations

- to invite interested stakeholders from within Vanuatu and the Pacific region to participate in a co-creative, open discussion interns of certification in general and particularly Vanuatu in terms of the PGEP pilot of a low cost multi certification platform

- to facilitate a discussion among the core institutions in terms of certification in Vanuatu in order to understand the requirements that underlies the management of a national grower database.

3. Registration:

To commence registration process of attending growers who have expressed through the workshop and to create a communication platform in order to keep the information flow between growers, extension services and the VAC and all other local and regional stakeholders.

We encourage all stakeholders to participate in a co-creative approach in this opportunity to create an innovative platform for low cost multi-certification system that will lead to measurable improvements in the livelihoods of growers in Vanuatu and the Pacific Region.

John Saki is a founding member of the Pacific Growers Export Partnership, and innovative trading platform delivering entrepreneurial and value chain services to growers across the Pacific.

Through Guadalcanal Origin Trade, a company founded by John in 2009, his focus is primarily on bringing extension services to cocoa growers on the Guadalcanal Plains, as well as facilitating transparent and best practice export services for other region in the Solomon through his dedicated work within the Pacific Growers Export Partnership.
